The Senior Science Advisor for Food Chemical Toxicology accomplishes this by coordinating a CFSAN strategic and tactical plan for related CFSAN programs and coordinating with other areas of FDA, FDA’s stakeholders and other government agencies; maintaining a tracking and reporting on these programmatic activities across CFSAN; managing the coordination of relevant extramural research partnerships and programs with CFSAN’s Centers of Excellence; working with the FDA Commissioner’s Office on issues related to food chemical toxicology, serving as a liaison with other government agencies, academia, industry, trade associations, fostering coordination among program and research offices; and providing leadership, direction and advice regarding food chemical toxicology to the Center Director, Deputy Center Directors, and other senior FDA leaders.

The CFSAN Office of Food Additive Safety will be looking for a remote-eligible GS13 and GS14 toxicologists.  In this role, the toxicologist will evaluate toxicological and other data and information (including history of safe use) submitted to the FDA by notifiers that pertain to the safety and food additives, food contact substances and compounds generally recognized as safe (GRAS).  The toxicologist serves as a scientific reviewer and technical authority for evaluating toxicity data.  The toxicologist reviews and analyzes all available information on the safety of food additives, food contact substances and compounds generally recognized as safe (GRAS), and provides advice on and support for regulatory and public health action to promote consumer safety.

The Office of Dietary Supplement Programs (ODSP) of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition is seeking outstanding toxicologists to support dietary ingredient research through the ORISE Research Participation Program (https://orise.orau.gov/fda). The position will involve researching toxicity and exposure data of single and complex mixtures. Postgraduates must have received their degree in an appropriate STEM discipline within five years of the appointment start date or must complete all requirements for such a degree prior to the desired start date.

The CFSAN Office of Dietary Supplement Programs Safety Evaluation Branch will be looking for a remote-eligible GS13 toxicologist.  In this role, the toxicologist will evaluate toxicological and other data and information (including history of safe use) submitted to the FDA by notifiers that pertain to the safety and identity of dietary ingredients and dietary supplements.  The toxicologist serves as a scientific reviewer and technical authority of data for evaluating toxicity data relating to the degree of hazard associated with contaminants and toxicants in dietary ingredients and dietary supplements.  The toxicologist reviews and analyzes all available information on the safety of dietary ingredients and dietary supplements and provides advice on and support for regulatory and public health action to promote consumer safety.

The CFSAN Office of Dietary Supplement Programs Division of Research and Evaluation will be looking for a Branch Chief for the Safety Evaluation Branch (SEB).  An example of some of the duties for this supervisory toxicology/pharmacology role include:  The SEB Branch Chief serves as a national and international expert authority within CFSAN and across FDA, by providing authoritative and specialized toxicology and risk assessment expertise in consulting on an array of safety and regulatory issues and matters related to dietary supplements. The SEB Branch Chief directs the technical and regulatory activities of the Branch, providing oversight for safety review for New Dietary Ingredient Notifications (NDINs), Safety Determination Memos, and related evaluations pertinent to dietary supplements. The SEB Branch Chief provides direction to highly trained and skilled multidisciplinary regulatory scientists to ensure that all technical and scientific aspects of evaluations (e.g., toxicology, botany, clinical, biology) are addressed, that FDA’s regulatory decisions are scientifically and statutorily defensible, and that FDA’s review is clearly documented in the administrative record and sufficient to demonstrate that dietary supplements are properly evaluated. The SEB Branch Chief leads internal and intra-agency committees and working groups, and as an FDA representative on external committees led by other federal and international public health organizations pertaining to dietary supplements and safety as well as testing procedures and compliance with appropriate guidelines and policies.

The CFSAN Office of Applied Research and Safety Assessment will be looking for GS13/GS14 research toxicologists with an interest in research related to developmental neurotoxicity and cardiotoxicity.  The toxicologist conducts applied research designed to identify toxicity and the underlying mechanisms and/or modes of action of chemical compounds found in foods and dietary supplements. The toxicologist develops and evaluates new approach methods (NAMs) for obtaining toxicity data relating to the degree of hazard associated with chemicals in foods and dietary supplements.  The toxicologist provides expert advice on and support for regulatory and public health action to promote consumer safety.
